How to Get Mobility Aids in Germany: Guide for Ukrainian Refugees

Frank Gerhardt
Ukrainian refugees in Germany often require mobility aids to support their daily activities. This guide provides clear, step-by-step information on how to access these aids efficiently.
Eligibility Requirements and Legal Status for Ukrainian Refugees
The primary requirement to access mobility aids is holding temporary protection status under § 24 AufenthG. This status grants immediate access to social benefits equivalent to German citizens.
Before applying, you must register with local authorities (Anmeldung) and obtain a refugee registration certificate such as an Anmeldebescheinigung or Fiktionsbescheinigung.
Documents and Preparation for Your First Jobcenter Visit
Prepare essential documents like your passport, temporary protection certificate, and registration confirmation (Anmeldebescheinigung). Having a German bank account with an IBAN helps ensure smooth benefit payments, though alternatives exist if you don’t have one yet.
Also collect housing documents (rental agreement or accommodation confirmation) and medical documentation such as pregnancy or disability certificates. Official translations are necessary for documents issued outside Germany.

Bürgergeld Application Process and Benefit Amounts
Schedule an appointment at your local Jobcenter to submit your application (Antrag). The current Bürgergeld for single adults is €502 per month in 2024, with additional allowances for housing, heating, and special needs including mobility aids.
Processing typically takes 4–6 weeks; interim payments are often available. You can file a Widerspruch (appeal) if your application is denied or benefits are inadequate.
Ongoing Obligations and Integration Support Services
Recipients must provide monthly reports on their job search and income, and participate in required German language and orientation courses (Integrationskurs). Compliance with reporting and participation requirements is essential to continue receiving benefits.
Healthcare registration through the Jobcenter is mandatory. Child benefits (Kindergeld) and educational support such as BAföG are coordinated alongside Bürgergeld to facilitate integration and independence.
